Rural Broadband – Letter to Connecting Devon and Somerset from MPs

The Blackdown Hills Parish Network, to which we belong, has lobbied relentlessly to improve broadband in the Hills. Lobbying by them and others has prompted MPs to write an uncompromising collective letter to government on the subject. It is attached below. Broadhembury PC will continue to press the case.

Winter Roads Gritting Proposal

Our colleagues at the Blackdown Hills Parish Network have sent us the following:

SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL has recently announced that it is proposing no longer to grit roads to settlements which are 500 feet or more above sea level, roads which lead into adjoining counties, and school links between urban and rural areas.

If implemented this will have a considerable impact on our safe travel between villages and on regular routes across the Blackdown Hills on both sides of the county boundary.

SCC’s Blackdowns ward councillor Ross Henley has started a petition at and is looking for support for his campaign to persuade SCC to review this proposal. Please encourage anyone who may be affected to sign up before October 17th.

Britain on Film: Rural Life – Memorial Hall, September 19th

Relive the leisure and labour of our rural past on screen at Broadhembury Memorial Hall, 19th September 2018, at 3.00 p.m. and at 7.30 p.m.

The Parish Council has received the following invitation from the Memorial Hall Committee with a request to publicise a fascinating event they are running on the 19th of September.

It can sometimes seem hard to imagine the UK before smartphones and our era of hyperconnectivity and remember the simple pleasures that could be found in the diverse and beautiful landscapes of all our home nations.

Broadhembury Memorial Hall is offering you the chance to go back to those halcyon days with Britain on Film: Rural Life on 19th September 2018 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Admission is free but there will be donation request on leaving. Light refreshments will be available.

This new film features archive footage of the whole of the UK’s countryside. The film is also a chance to see Laurie Lee’s hymn to the beauty of the West of England, a country pub landlord charged with raising the alarm against the Russians and one of the UK’s first sound documentary films, with a shepherd protecting his flock in a documentary shot in the Cheviot Hills.

For more information on the event, including a list of the films that will be shown, please download their flyer below.
